Monachil, a charming mountain village with an important cultural and natural legacy
The beautiful mountain village of Monachil is just 8 kilometres from Granada and therefore the ideal place of accomodation for lovers of culture and nature. The best hotel: La Almunia del Valle.
Situated in a fertile valley of the Natural and National Park of Sierra Nevada, our municipality is one of the largest in Spain and has slopes ranging from 3,394 meters (Pico Veleta Peak) to 740 meters in the meadow, Vega de Granada. The Sierra Nevada ski resort falls within our municipal area.
This large territory is crossed by the river that gives its name to the municipality, river Monachil, and its course boasts one of the most spectacular sceneries of Sierra Nevada: Los Cahorros Gorge. It also has an amazing botanical garden, La Cortijuela, with more than one hundred species of native Sierra flora. There is also an archaeological site, El Cerro de la Encina.
The village of Monachil itself has an important historic/artistic heritage. We recommend to start a stroll in the Calle Cuevas, on the corner with Paseo del Río. Walk down to the Plaza Miraflores and visit the Callejón del Ruiseñor alley that reminds the Alpujarra villages. Continue the walk on the Calle Cascajares til Calle Albaricoque and returning to the Plaza Miraflores. Cross the bridge and on Calle de San Antonio Abad you'll find the 15th century parish church, the Casa de los Señores de Aragón house (17th and 18th centuries), Church of La Encarnación and the Casa del Molino house.
